Recently we came across a fresh design startup from Bishkek that we didn´t want to keep from you. Maksat and Kaniet from wooden.kg handcraft beautiful sunglasses and bow-ties from 100% wood. We had a look into their workshop.
Right in front of the factory territory of the local Coca-Cola outlet on the outskirts of Bishkek, co-founder Maksat is waiting for me on his mountain-bike. He guides me along trucks being stocked with bottles through a backdoor into their island of craftsmanship. Here, he and his friend Kaniet started turning their dream of making wooden style accessories completely by themselves into reality.
Having a background in environmental engineering, Maksat felt that he preferred doing something with his hands rather than sitting at an office desk from 9 to 5. So he and Kaniet studied materials, techniques and necessary equipment and just started from scratch. And within a year they evolved to a small, but highly professional label with top designs, materials and quality.
dreams to use only local wood in the future
“We would love to use Kyrgyz wood as the base material for our products” fantasizes Maksat, but for now they have to rely on different woods from countries including South Africa, because there are no processing opportunities in the country for the fine type of wood they require.

We are already thinking of what we could do together in the future. Who knows, maybe one day they will get the chance to make glasses from local walnut wood. We´ll do what we can make it happen!
